Wow...2021 marks an amazing achievement for Athena Sports Academy as we celebrate our tenth anniversary.
Athena was founded in 2011 by Gerry Fuller, Samantha Robson and Jeff Wade after taking over from 'Jayenell Gymnastics'. Initially starting as just a flexibility class, the club provided tumbling, acro and disability-friendly sessions to it's 80 members.
Over the next few years, the club grew in size, adding more sessions and members and in 2016, reached a significant milestone by securing it's own facility within Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre. Following a re-brand to it's image and a re-structure at the club, Athena progressed further, focusing on it's commitment to inclusivity and development of younger gymnasts.
Now, in 2021, directed by Head Coach, Brittainy Carruthers (daughter of founding member Gerry), Athena operates seven days a week: with over 500 members taking part in over 50 different sessions, as well as plans to continue growth and offering a diverse choice of classes, with something for everyone!
Athena has consistently enjoyed regional and national competition success, with multiple Acro partnerships achieving National Championship status, as well as being the chosen 'Host Club' for the British Gymnastics annual regional qualifiers.
We'd like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has ever been associated with the club throughout it's entire history: we really couldn't have succeeded without the support and contribution of such amazing members and staff... so a HUGE - THANK YOU!
